JOSEPHINE MICHEL IS A PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTIST CURRENTLY BASED IN BRUSSELS.

THE HEARING EXPERIENCE BOTH STIMULATES AND SHAPES HER IMAGES, WHICH ARE INFUSED BY THE ACOUSTIC QUALITIES OF THE ENVIRONMENT, DRAWING ON WHAT PAUL SHARITS CALLED ‘OPERATIONAL ANALOGUES BETWEEN WAYS OF SEEING AND WAYS OF HEARING’. TO THIS END, HER PHOTOGRAPHS OFTEN ENGAGE PROCESSES THAT ARE COMMON TO THE VISUAL AND THE SONIC, SUCH AS IMPROVISATION, TEXTURE AND REVERBERATION. EQUALLY IMPORTANT ARE THE WAY WE FORM VISUAL GESTALTS FROM REDUCED INFORMATION, AND, IN A BROADER SENSE, THE TENSIONS THAT SHAPE OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE MATERIALITY OF THE WORLD.
